Gutter has been renown as one of the most perceptive and enigmatic lyricists of his time. Rustic Overtones is a seven piece rock band from Portland, Maine who’s discography spans 20 years. The band’s unique version of indie rock is strongly influenced by soul music, garage punk, jazz, and psychedelic music of the 60’s and 70’s.
Dave Gutter’s song “Letter to the President” is taught at Harvard as part of a literary class on protest music and “Stomping Ground” written by Gutter, as performed by Aaron Neville and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, is taught as part of the history of New Orleans music at Berklee School of Music.
Check out the praise he’s gotten from folks who the rest of us worship:
“His lyrics are packed with imagery and accompanied by clever turns of phrase and layered meanings reminiscent of John Lennon, Kris Kristofferson and Leonard Cohen.” – Bluebird Reviews
“One of my favorite groups” – David Bowie (Bowie appears on the first major Rustic Overtones record.)
“Quite possibly the tightest band I’ve ever seen.” -Ray Lamontagne
“The band’s firepower—a skin-tight rhythm section, soulful keyboards, stinging guitars, funky horns, and the potent, complex, and totally engrossing voice of front man Dave Gutter” -Billboard Magazine
“There’s no voice quite like Dave Gutter’s, a weathered coffee-and-cigarettes growl that can turn vulnerable to vicious and crackles like a vintage Fender amp when he screams.” -Rolling Stone
