Rebel Alliance
Woody and the Rebel Alliance was born in 2009 by frontman Mike “Woody” Wood, in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. The group quickly became a staple of the Berkshire County music scene, hosting countless events, parties, and open jams under the name “Rebel Alliance”. With their signature sound Reggae-Inspired Jam Rock – a genre-bending mix of danceable grooves with a dash of rock and roll, and the free-flowing spirit of a jam band – the band built a reputation for delivering unforgettable live energy.
They quickly gained critical acclaim in both regional and national competitions, including reaching the finals in Hard Rock Cafe’s worldwide battle of the bands. The year prior, they took home first place at the StrangeCreek Battle of the Bands (2012), which secured them spots at various festivals across the Northeastern U.S. Since then, Woody and the Rebel Alliance has shared the stage with icons like Booker T. & the MG’s and reggae legends Black Uhuru – and most recently turned up the heat as both the opener and backing band for Matisyahu.
They released their debut EP in 2013, highlighted by the fan favorite “Last Night I Shot the DJ.” In 2019, they followed with their first full-length studio album, Raise Your Soul, which included both the powerful title track and the critically acclaimed “My Song” that was later named one of the top 200 songs ever written in New England by the New Music Alliance.
In 2022 and 2023, the band released a string of singles that once again showcased their bold approach to genre-bending. “Chores and Money” leaned into an old vaudevillian swing style, exploring the struggles of housekeeping and relationships; “Sunshine or Rain” offers a heartfelt ballad about the choice to be a positive or negative force in the world. They even put their own spin on the holidays with “Snowmen… Sixpacks…”—a Christmas track sung by Alan Taylor, highlighting just one of his many songwriting contributions to the band.
The band’s lineup has evolved over the years, but their commitment to challenging the status quo and redefining genres has remained strong. While the faces may change, their core message stays the same: building community through music.
