The Big Takeover announces the Funny Things Will Happen 28-day National Tour

GREENFIELD, MA: In November of 2017, the upstate New York reggae/soul band Big Takeover celebrated their tenth year of existence with a show in BSP’s back room theater in Kingston, NY. They were the first local band ever to headline the 800-capacity room where Brooklyn indie icons Grizzly Bear and San Francisco art-rock darlings Deerhoof had performed in the months before. It was a fitting honor for a band that, in terms of magnetic drawing power, had come to dominate the bustling Hudson Valley regional scene (Woodstock, Hudson, Kingston) like no other band before them. They’ll bring their original reggae sound to Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox, sharing a co-bill with soul/funk outfit Other Black and openers kid astronaut. RSVP at the FB event here and tickets are available here.

Fronted by the charismatic Jamaican-born songwriter NeeNee Rushie, The Big Takeover plays an exuberant and sly mix of horn-fueled reggae in the tradition of Desmond Dekker, Motown-influenced pop, and a kind of globally-accented soul music that is entirely their own. The seven-piece live dynamo has been making headway on the national stage for several years. Aided by a few cross-country tours, their acclaimed 2017 album Silly Girl registered on over 50 radio stations, including favored status at over 12 NPR stations. They have shared bills with The Original Wailers, Jefferson Starship, Eek-a-Mouse, English Beat, the Slackers and many more.

In May of 2018, the Big Takeover began the Funny Things Will Happen tour, an aggressive 28-date national outing. The dates include a headline spot at the El Cerrito/WorldOne Festival in California and a featured set in front of an anticipated 10,000 people at Omaha’s Jazz on the Green. This time out, they are joined by virtuoso percussionist Manuel Quintana (Rachel Yamagata, Conehead Buddha) who also co-produced The Big Takeover’s latest single “Rainboots.”

“The Big Takeover heats up its classic reggae and ska stylings with a horn-powered Motown bounce and pop verve straight from the 1960s and ’70s.” --Pulse
